Born Dorchester, Massachusetts October 17, 1859. Trained at the Boston Art School and then Academie Julian in Paris, 1886. where he came under the influence of the impressionist movement. He returned to the United Sates in 1889 after receiving the bronze medal in the Paris Exposition of that year. He was one of the group formed in 1898 who called themselves "Ten American Painters." Hassam lived in New York, traveled to Spain, the Southwest and California, and then worked primarily in Cos Cob, Old Lyme, Glouchester and Easthampton where he spent his summers and lived for fifteen years before his death in 1935. |
